Rock Valley College

Math Placement

The first math class you can take at Rock Valley College will be determined by your score on the RVC Placement Test (ACCUPLACER) or ACT.

Transfer students or students already holding a college degree may be waived from taking the Placement Test by submitting transcripts to the RVC Admissions & Records Office.

Read more about placement testing at RVC.

Whether you're taking the RVC Math Placement Test for the first time or retesting, see "Preparing for Math Placement Tests" to read about an online program for preparing for the test.

Not satisfied with your placement?

Before enrolling in and RVC Math Class ---> Retake the RVC (ACCUPLACER) Placement Test OR Complete a Math Appeal

After starting an RVC Math Class ---> Apply for a Math Petition OR See the Associate Dean

Note: All students are allowed one retest in mathematics BEFORE enrolling in a math course--cost is $5.00. Before attempting a retest it is advisable to prepare using the MyMathTest online program.

What is a Math Appeal?

If you don't believe your score on the RVC Placement Test (ACCUPLACER) accurately reflects your knowledge of mathematics, you may appeal your placement to the Mathematics Placement Appeal Committee.

A student may appeal to be placed one course level higher than what is mandated by the RVC Placement Test (ACCUPLACER). The student must have completed (with a grade of C or higher) the equivalent of the course into which they wish to enroll and provide documentation of this.

Note: Math appeals may only be submitted BEFORE you enroll in a RVC math class.

To appeal your math placement, submit a Mathematics Placement Appeal Form, available in the Testing Center or Math Office (JCSM-1015).

What is a Math Petition?

Students who placed into a developmental (pre-100 level) math course may petition for ONE additional attempt at the Placement Test by completing a form in the Testing Center (lower level of the Student Center).

To qualify, at least one of the following must be satisfied:

  • Earned a B or better in a developmental math class
  • Completed at least 80% of A+dvancer online lessons in the Testing Center
  • 3 years or more have passed since attempting an RVC math class
