Morgan Smith of Rock Valley College’s Refugee and Immigrant Services spearheaded the project as part of the summer programming. Students participating in the project hail from Burma, Tanzania, Rwanda and Iraq.
A refugee is a person who has fled his or her native country because of past persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution. This can be based on race, nationality, religion, political opinion, or a membership in a particular social group. Refugees are legal immigrants who are looking for an opportunity to demonstrate their strong work ethics.
Yes, refugees are authorized to work in the United States. They can produce documentation which establishes their right to work for employers. Furthermore, all refugees are E-Verify compliant. Our Business Services staff are available to answer any questions regarding this authorization process.
Refugees have varying levels of English capabilities, both spoken and written. Many employers have taken full advantage of our free interpretation services, if needed on the job.
