Rock Valley College

Academic ESL Program (AEP)

The Academic English Program is a free program designed to assist advanced-level, non-native English speakers to prepare for and transition to further education at Rock Valley College. Also, career readiness and success skills are included.

Students in the AEP program complete extensive coursework in:

  • Grammar
  • Writing
  • Reading Strategies
  • Listening & Speaking
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Basic Math & Financial Literacy

AEP students receive 12 hours of instruction per week. Successful students attend every class session. Students must be willing to spend time outside of class completing homework, readings, and projects, as well as preparing for tests. AEP students do not earn academic credit.

Many college-readiness resources and activities are available in the AEP program. These include:

  • EAGLE learning management system
  • MyFoundationsLab
  • Credit class observation opportunities
  • Research-based oral presentations

AEP students must test into the Exit-Level range on the CASAS ESL reading assessment, plus achieve a score of 4.0+ on the TABE reading assessment. There is no cost to be tested. Testing and registration lasts approximately 3-4 hours.

During the enrollment session, you will have the opportunity to ask questions. If you do not qualify for the AEP program, but are interested, you are encouraged to enroll in the Rock Valley College ESL class appropriate for your level in order to strengthen your academic skills. You can re-test for the AEP program in a future semester.
